Warning from the National Park Service

In light of the rising frequency of human-grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert while in the field.
"We advise outdoorsman to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry a can of pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.  It is also a good idea to watch out for signs of bear activity.
Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear manure.
Black bear manure is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.
Grizzly bear manure  has little bells in it and smells like pepper."

Instruction by Bob

Guide Service, Casting, Reading the Stream, and FlyTying

About Bob  Licensed, bonded and lots of fun.  Whether you're just beginning or maybe in need of a little tweaking, Bobs your guy.   A licensed guide bydadshannonblue.jpeg (30276 bytes) the state of California, Bob has been fishing  for over 40 years and teaching for 20 plus years.  He's been fishing the southern California area in both fresh waters and the ocean for almost as long.    Originally from the mountains of North Carolina, he fell in love with the sport of fishing at an early age and to this day it's his favorite thing to do................... well, let's just say he doesn't go anywhere without his rod.  Email Bob@fishingla.com and ask about family camping excursions and guided trips for Golden Trout.

Fly Casting   It's fun, not too hard to learn, and definitely the most important part of FlyFishing.  Presenting the fly to the fish properly will increase the odds that your day of fishing will be more productive and probably more fun.  Lessons are $50 per hour and Bob will work at your convenience.  A lesson during a lunch hour is not unheard of.   For info on FlyCasting please Email Bob and leave us a message and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Reading the Stream  There's nothing wrong with going out and pounding the stream but a lesson or two  can save you a lot of time and teach you some of the etiquette that  makes spending a day on the stream more enjoyable.   Pools, riffles, undercut banks, head and tail of the pool, the hatch, these are some of the things you'll want to know before you hit the stream.  Safety is always  the first thing Bob teaches.  Safety in gear,  wading, and safety on when and where it is that you go.  For a day on the stream with Bob you'll be picked up, driven to the stream, fish for few hours, have lunch, fish for a while longer, and then be returned to the pickup spot.  A day on the stream with Bob is $175.  For more info on availability please Email Bob and leave a message.

FlyTying  Bob's been tying his own flies for years and brings it all to you with private lessons.  Tying your own fly and catching a fish with it is a special experience, but you don't have to be a fisherperson to want to tie flys.   Some of the greatest flytyers have never fished a day in their lives but have created some of the most beautiful flies ever.  Tying flies can be very relaxing and very rewarding.  Learn the basics, practice, and you're off on a fun trip in the land of fur and feathers.  A session with Bob runs $75 for a three hour lesson.  For more info on availability please Email Bob  and leave a message.

Bob's Tip for beginners

If you want to go fishing for the first time and you don't know how to begin, start with the basic knot.  The clinch knot.  Nothing is more frustrating when your out for the first time and your hook keeps coming off when you get a bite.  Fishing line or monofiliment is tricky to tie so here's a way to start........

When teaching kids I call it the "in and out knot",  because all you do is stick the end of the line ( five or six inches) through the eye of the hook and twist it around the line a few turns and then bring it back in  through the loop you created by the eye of the hook and back out through the loop you created with the in move.  Pull both ends tight and you've got a very strong knot that's not going to come loose while playing a fish.  Here's a diagram to show the simplicity of the improved clinch knot.

Recipe's

Bob's Favorite.................Salmon or Trout, Grilled

Take fillets of either Trout or Salmon, rinse well, cover both sides with Dejon Mustard and wrap in at least two layers of tin foil.
Place on a preheated hot grill.  For trout fillets, cook each side for 9 minutes.
For the salmon cook on each side for 11 to 12 minutes.  If you like your fish a little more firm and darkened cook a minute or two longer on each side.

Enjoy,
Bob Ayers

Hawihi59@aol.com from Hawaii sent us a couple of recipes:
Stuffed Uhu or Parrot Fish;  Stuffing mix; mayonaise,  corned beef/sausage, onion, tomato, parsley, and shitake mushrooms.  Mix together and stuff your fish.  Place in tin pan, cover with foil and let steam.  This can be done on a BBQ or in the oven, bake at 350 degrees til done.  This recipe should work with any type fish.  Enjoy

Here's one I can't wait to try;  a little pupu from Hawaii
You'll need a jar of raw oysters, bacon, skewers, and a grill.  Cut oysters into bite size pieces, wrap with about 2" of bacon, secure with skewer, place on grill until bacon is cooked.  Enjoy

Thank you Hawihi.
